Drip Notice

All customers of the Boyne City Water system are asked to immediately begin running a pencil width trickle of water from one faucet to help prevent water lines from freezing.
Frost in the Boyne City area has been reported to extend about seven feet below ground in the last few days. The combination of extremely cold weather, clear sunny days and warmer weather ahead will probably lead to the frost being driven even further down in the days and weeks ahead. Contrary to what many might think, periods of sunny warmer weather may actually make things worse by pushing the frost down even deeper into the ground. While no City water mains have frozen, service leads to individual customers are more vulnerable.
To avoid the inconvenience of customers losing their water supply, having damage from frozen pipes and the costs of having services restored and pipes repaired; customers are urged to take this voluntary action. Boyne City will announce through the media and on its websites when this temporary measure can be ended. Customer accounts will be adjusted to offset the additional water used during this period based on previous usage history.Customers are urged to take special care in the cold parts of their buildings (basements, crawl spaces, outer walls) to avoid the freezing and bursting of pipes.
In addition as a further safety precaution the public is asked to help keep snow cleared from around fire hydrants in or near their yards in case disaster strikes and a fire occurs. The buildings or lives you save may be your own or those of your neighbors.
This information is being shared on the news, radio, media websites, newspapers, facebook pages, etc. but there are still people who aren't aware. Please help spread the word…ask people you know "Are you aware & remembering to run your water?"
Customers with questions on these matters are urged to call either 23.582.6597 or 231.582.0335 during office hours.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW…
*This is due to the depth of frost in the ground, not the immediate temperature outside (don't shut it off just because the temps are above freezing).
*Run water until further notified (sometime in the spring).
*Run COLD water…not hot
*If you live in an apt. complex, duplex etc. contact and coordinate with your landlord
*We are requesting this from City water customers only
*If you have a water softener, you might want to use a faucet not connected to it.
*If you have a drain field, you can run an outside spigot/hose so you are not filling your septic (run it away from your basement/crawl space).
*Customer accounts will be adjusted to offset the additional water used during this period based on previous usage history.
*If you have additional questions you are urged to call 231.582.6597 or 582.0335 during office hours.
